LibreTexts
LibreTexts is an open education website with free OER textbooks, course libraries, ADAPT homework, faculty collaboration tools, and learning materials across many subjects.
What LibreTexts is
LibreTexts is an open education website for free OER textbooks, course materials, subject libraries, homework tools, and faculty collaboration. It connects learners and educators to open content across STEM, humanities, social sciences, workforce education, K-12 materials, and related teaching resources.
Subject libraries
LibreTexts is organized around subject libraries such as biology, business, chemistry, engineering, geosciences, humanities, mathematics, physics, social sciences, statistics, and workforce education. That library structure helps students and instructors start from a course area rather than a single textbook title.
Open educational resources
LibreTexts is part of the open educational resources movement. OER materials are designed to be freely accessible and, depending on the license, reusable or adaptable. For instructors, this can make it easier to customize readings; for students, it can reduce the cost of required course materials.
ADAPT homework
LibreTexts also connects to ADAPT, its homework and assessment platform. That makes the ecosystem broader than a textbook library: instructors may use readings, practice, assessments, and course materials together rather than treating the textbook as a separate static file.
Faculty collaboration
Open education work often depends on faculty editing, remixing, reviewing, and sharing materials. LibreTexts supports that through tools and spaces such as Commons, Studio, Conductor, and its wider LibreVerse ecosystem, giving educators ways to build and maintain course resources collaboratively.
Cost and access
A major purpose of LibreTexts is reducing the financial burden of textbooks and course materials. Free online access can make a difference for students who might otherwise delay buying materials, share a book, or go without readings during the first weeks of class.
Why it matters
Course materials shape what students can study and when they can start. LibreTexts matters because it combines open textbooks, modular course content, and teaching tools in a way that can lower costs while giving educators more flexibility over what they assign.
Limits and tradeoffs
Open materials still require careful review. Instructors need to check accuracy, coverage, accessibility, licensing, update history, homework fit, and local learning goals. Free access is powerful, but a course still needs thoughtful design and support around the materials.
